When I was first starting planning Roar & Foam and thinking about what labels I wanted to include in our store, I really felt a calling to promote and find Australian designers but it was so incredibly hard to find suppliers! I am a huge lover of brands such as Arnhem and Spell & the Gypsy Collective but it is nigh on impossible for a new unestablished business to get their hands on these labels. So what was I to do? I've had a lot of people ask me, where do you find the clothing you stock? Let me tell you, it's not easy! If I had wanted to sell cheaper quality items, it would have been simple. There's a plethora of online overseas wholesalers willing and waiting to sell you cheap quality clothing at next to nothing that boutiques can mark up 300% and more but this never resonated with me or rang true to the vision I have for Roar & Foam.
So ignoring the temptation to take the easy option I started by going through my own wardrobe and looking at the labels that I love to wear and then ringing them and asking them to take me on as a supplier. I'll be honest here, the first delivery was so disappointing. The sizing was all over the place and it didn't fit the look and feel of our boutique. So back it went and the process of finding a supplier started again.
I've had many a night just wanting to give up thinking there are so many other boutiques out there doing it better than me, they have better websites, more choices, better photos blah blah blah, but I've just had to keep pushing through because I believe in it.
On a trip to Adelaide, I took a chance on fronting up to a well known wholesaler not knowing what the outcome would be, but we had an instant connection with their warmth and passion for Aussie designers and labels and a relationship has been formed.
Is the clothing expensive to purchase? Yes - even at wholesale prices! But what I've learned is nothing is ever gained by going the cheap and easy option. It's like everything in life, you get what you give and it's a motto I live by and this is why I've tried to keep all my prices reasonable and offer fair postage. My margins are small and fair and it's my hope that this boutique showcases the best of Aussie designers in the mid range bracket.
And so the journey continues...some days it's tough let's be frank lol! This is not a regular 9-5 job but I love it! I love connecting with so many beautiful women and hearing their feedback and I'm always open to ideas from my customers, and friends about what they'd like to see in the store.
on a closing note, I'd just like to say if you have an idea or a goal or a dream, you can achieve it. It takes persistence, it takes the juggling of kids and husbands and work demands, it takes faith and prayer, it takes self belief! and if you still can't work it out there's always google! So if this speaks to you, I'm glad. Keep breathing and keep pushing through. One of the things I do is talk to myself (yes I'm a crazy cat lady without the cats) if I hear a doubt, I say to myself, I doubt that doubt, I can do this!
You can do it too! Chase them dreams....
